Well, you have raised some important issues that we have not had a chance to address. I have to admit a certain fondness for the Guerilla Girls even though they attacked an art historian (woman) who I really respect.

Gender is an undeniable factor in the success/failure of artists. Look at many of the women surrealists who destroyed their own work to prop up the work of husbands/lovers (did you know about that? There is a whole lost history of woman surrealist artists as a result of this)... Nabakov has given credit to his wife for her edits while typing his manuscripts... Brecht is supposed to have used the musical compositions of various girlfriends as his own ...women created quilts that predated the op-art movement by hundreds of years... etc, etc...

I can get old school on this topic. Your mom and I would bond over it.

I remember seeing his work Projects 27 at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. It was so simple and amazing. I could not figure out why I liked the work so much, but I did. It is like the pitchfork: deceptively simple, but somehow it just gets under your skin.

Maya, You have a point! There has been a democritization of snobbery and the facade of wealth in the past 30 years. It is a major culture shift.

Many people wonder how it can shift back? Some people are even successful ignoring it. But it *is* insipid and damaging.

I am not anti-commercialism, but i do see that in my world, there are only pockets left that maintain a healthy balance.

of course it goes both ways but it made me see the waste of money...people are dying off hunger...food...that is in our reach yet we spend money on entertainment, make-up, to hide a birthmark we don't like...
it's cruel cause by ourselves we have almost no power to achieve world peace, no hunger or any of the things we claim we want so much but if there's one less sitcom or soap opera or music video or a millions other things, we can spend that money on food or making a country safer or anything else...makes me wonder about our values to life...our goals.
if u ask a child of this century what it wants to be when it grows up...9 out of 10 it's : i want to be rich.
is that our standard today?...does money really stand for happiness
is that what we think, believe??
today this day a perfect life equals: a size 0, rich with the perfect partner with bleached teeth, best clothes , food, 2 cars....great job that pays even when u sleep..

i can go on and on about this...frustrating GGRRRRRRRRRR

The first time I saw Cy Twombley's paintings in person, I too was amazed. They really do force you to interact with them. You cannot even begin to get that sense from a reproduction of the work.

Maya, Thanks for adding this. I did find myself wondering about a similar breakdown. How many people earn their livings from the money she did not spend on her video and where does *that* money go as well?

I do like the idea of spending money more creatively.

I found a few excerpts of his work online and now I am so curious to see it exhibited. I loved the twirling shadow theater (I used to know the name for the device, but I forgot it... i'm sure I'll wake up in the middle of the night from the memory of the name). Really interesting and beautiful work. Thanks Anna.
